About Us

Hello, thanks for visiting River Soar Records.

I'm Marvin, I set this little business up with my friend Mr David Oliver (you'll hear from him shortly).  Like many Liverpudlians I grew up on a healthy diet of music from the swinging 60s and 70s. My parents ran bars and clubs in Liverpool in the famous Mathew Street a few doors up from the Cavern. Mum ran a weekly Beatles quiz and dad was landlord of the John Lennon bar. My sister and I played the jukebox, dancing to 60s and 70s rock 'n' roll records for hours on end. I've collected music all my life but like many people had a hiatus on vinyl during the late 90s.

When most people are binge watching on Netflix I'm listening to or reading about music having just achieved my 2nd diploma in the history of rock n roll. Falling back in love with vinyl has led to this venture and I hope we help lots of  people in Leicester and beyond fall in love again and again with the records we sell and support the local music scene.
Favourite music to listen to?  Too many to mention, but off the top of my head: funk, soul and rock n roll, and everything else to be fair.
Our aim is to bring new people into the vinyl world, we aim to have a core local customer base making home deliveries where possible as well as selling all over the world which has happened straight away.
Hi, I'm Dave and I got my first vinyl album aged 14 as a Christmas present from a newsagent where I did a paper round. It was Star Party a chart compilation with Ian Dury, Blondie, Boomtown Rats, Patti Smith, Darts and Showaddywaddy! and I've been hooked ever since.
My first live gig was UB40 at Kidderminster Town Hall '80 and then I lived in Leeds during the mid 80's when it was Goth capital of the world. I worked at the concerts at Leeds University and got to see so many great bands and some not so for free!
With my wife Lindsey I am also the host of Garden Glastonbury a micro music festival in my back garden which is now in it's 18th year. We've even had the guitarist from Spiritualized Doggen Foster and Damned bass player Bryn Merrick grace the stage.
A few years ago I became a part time Joey Ramone in a Ramones tribute band The Ramoned which fulfilled a teenage dream. I am also partial to doing Popmaster every day on BBC radio 2.
Setting up a record store with Marvin is the next exciting step in my musical journey. I especially like new wave, punk, heavy metal and rock with a bit of 80's thrown in.
I have met so many interesting people through a love for music and I'm hoping this grows even more, as someone wiser than me once said "music is the food of love"
